Medford Sunrise held the town’s first Field of Honor® over Memorial Day week, 2019. In the weeks leading up to the event, members of the community were invited to sponsor a flag in the name of a person whom they nominated as having exhibited Service Above Self. It could be a family member who died in the service to our nation; a person currently serving in the military; a first responder who keeps our community safe and responds in all weather to emergencies; or any person who has demonstrated the Rotarian ideal of Service Above Self by touching the lives of others.
On Friday, May 24, Rotarians and community volunteers  erected at least 200 full-size American flags on 8-foot flag poles in Freedom Park—in perfectly symmetrical rows. Medallions were placed on flags with details of the nominated “heroes.” The Field of Honor® remained for a full week, from May 25 through June 1, 2019.
The cost of the event was borne by those who sponsored a flag for $50 and by corporate sponsors. All proceeds will be donated by Medford Sunrise to organizations that serve veterans and current military personnel, the Rotary Peace Centers and deserving local charities.
